There is no need for a 14 km bypass of Ballaghaderreen and its impact on small business in the town is potentially devastating, according to local Sinn Fein councillor Michael Mulligan.
As the new multi million euro bypass is to be officially opened over the next number of days, councillor Mulligan says a ring road of Ballaghaderreen was all that was required and he is concerned that the new bypass taking traffic miles away from the town centre will mean the end of a number of small businesses.
He said when the bypass of Mullingar opened – 17 small shops in the town closed within months and it took years for business in the town to recover.
